XANADU - The Art of Steven Peery

I chase the improbable: An off-angle twist in reality that sings like Pavarotti.

I am a believer in possibility.

"Your photography is like the dancing of Fred Astaire -JUST INCREDIBLE!"  Dr. Shachar Tauber, Yale Eye Center in 2004 when I had a photography site on SmugMug.  Dr. Tauber currently practices in Springfield, Mo.  Dr. Tauber is a Mercy Hospital Affiliate at Mercy Clinic Eye Specialists, Dir. of Ophthalmology Research, 1229 E. Seminole St.

Dr. Paul Guida, New Haven, Ct. ophthalmologist with an office on Beers St. (now retired).  Dr. Guida said this on Mar. 23, 2018:  "Today, your vision is 20/200 in the right eye and no light perception in the left eye...All your doctors (Boston & New Haven) and I agree that YOUR VISION IS TRULY UNIQUE...It's OK, do your art all day long.".

Despite my visual impairment, I make things 'happen', I do the work.  I am blessed because of premature birth (massive retina damage from 3 months in pure oxygen).  Why do I say 'blessed'?  I have turned what most people would regard as a tragedy into a marvelous way of seeing 'differently' and powerfully.  Indeed, I have made an unusual and joyous life for myself far, far beyond the expected.  I wouldn't trade my vision for anything - it is so fascinating EVERY day!

NOW, I offer you my art, my soul, in the hope you will be inspired and cherish what I have accomplished.

My love of color, shape and contrast blossomed on a quiet Sunday at our church.   That day, at the age of 7, my quest for vibrant beauty showed its urgent, lifelong strength when I dragged a chair around our church hall climbing up to view every artwork in an exhibit.  I was thrilled!  Next came BIG Crayola sets where I taught myself how to glaze and scumble. Then, as a teenager, I moved on to using my Dad's Fuji film camera and Bolex movie camera to discover hidden marvels. There were cameras and more cameras that opened up new worlds, especially with the advent of digital technology and the ability to tweak, adjust and see the result immediately.  I often worked late into the night until the mockingbirds started to sing as dawn approached.  Urban New Haven, Ct. was my haunt, my muse.

While fine-art photography is crucial to my artistic adventure, I never abandoned drawing ideas and considering an impossible green against a silver blue, a 'just so' that is beyond logic.  Or, maybe, a stubby tree with a personality bigger than the sky while shadows challenge the clarity of light on the grass below.  OH MY; WOW; GEE WHIZ - there's another idea to explore!

Mixed media, photography, drawing, painting dreams - all are part of my joy, my love of life and all people!  I hope you find my artwork liberating and positive.  Let it open the doors of wonder!

ALWAYS, charge forward into magic, into ART!

                                                                               Yours, Steve
